Alarm systems and Physical Security

Burglar Alarms - Visible burglar alarms make burglars think twice. They will normally select a target premises where there are no complications. People who have to sense and foresight to install security systems pose a threat to the criminal.

There are many burglar alarm systems on the market, ranging from Low Quality DIY alarms to more sophisticated alarms. In some cases where wiring will be a problem it is possible to install wireless alarms.  All system should be professionally installed to comply with BS4737 or EN50131/PD6662 standards.
Remember, a badly-fitted alarm can create problems in itself.

Don't install a DIY system unless you have the electrical knowledge and practical skill to do so.

Make sure your security system is installed by a Professional Security Installation Company. Avoid companies that will not only install your system, and then disappear, never to be seen again. Like many systems, maintenance is essential to ensure reliability over the years.

Doors - Secure All Doors. If doors are not secure, neither is your home. Fit back and front doors with five lever mortise deadlocks - and use it. Fit all exterior doors - top and bottom - with bolts.

Windows - A third of burglars get in through a back window. Fit key-operated window locks to all downstairs windows, those which can't be seen from the street and easily accessible upstairs window, e.g. those above a flat roof or by a drainpipe.

Lighting - Good lighting can deter a thief. Think of having external security light with infra-red sensor that switches the light on for a few moments when it detects movement in its range.

Home & Away - Don't tempt the thief - keep all valuable items out of sight. Don't advertise your absence when you're on holiday, or even when out at work or shopping or at home sleeping. Many burglars will only tackle an unoccupied house. I say many but not all. An increasing number of burglaries occur during the night when occupants are asleep. For that reason a professionally designed system will be capable of Part arming of areas not occupied allowing bedrooms, bathrooms etc to be accessed as required.

Fire Detection - Protect your safety & the safety of your family. With all security, consideration must be given to the risk of fire and means of escape. Fit smoke detector and even carbon monoxide detector which detects gas leakages.

Personal Attack - For personal safety and peace of mind; consider a stand alone panic attack alarm or an intruder alarm with panic attack facility. It is useful to summon help or police response when you are attacked or feel threatened by an intruder or a stranger in your home.

Home Insurance - Insurance will relieve you of the financial worry of replacing stolen goods and many insurance companies offer reduced premiums for people with good home security.

Advice on CCTV and Security Lighting Systems

CCTV security cameras - Note that some CCTV cameras are ineffective in the dark, and as such you should consider day/night cameras which allow your CCTV system to be effective in the lowest of light conditions. Day/Night security cameras automatically change from colour during the day mode to clear black and white during night mode.

Systems can be monitored on dedicated monitors in full or multiscreen modes. Alternatively they can be viewed by integrating into home television system. Recording of Video Data is normally by means of a Digital Video recorder.

Security systems - Good security systems don't come cheap in the short term, invest in quality security systems which will deliver good service for many years and are likely to be cheaper in the long run.

Security Lighting - Improve your exterior lighting without blinding the neighbours. Ensure that exterior lights are installed at high level to look downwards and give a larger area of coverage rather than pointing directly at persons. Standalone automatic lights or sophisticated lighting systems   are extremely effective in crime prevention but are also very beneficial as courtesy lighting for friends and family.

Dummy security does not provide protection.  Do not fool yourself thinking dummy CCTV cameras and dummy alarm boxes can protect your property. It is very easy for anyone to identify real and fake equipment.

The weakness of such mentality, is there to be exposed when the burglar calls!
